Make a Chess Board

Make a Chess Board!

Create a chess board that you’ll treasure for years! In this workshop, we’ll use techniques similar to those used in making patterned end-grain cutting boards to craft a unique chess board.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Wood Selection: Choose from a variety of dark and light-colored woods.
  • Wood Treatment: Experiment with wood bleach (oxalic acid) and iron acetate (vinegar/iron) mixtures to lighten or ebonize wood.
  • Cutting Techniques: Use table and miter saws to rip and crosscut wood.
  • Pattern Assembly: Glue up patterned boards to create the chess board design.
  • Finishing: Sand and finish the end grain for a smooth, durable surface.

Join us for this engaging workshop and take home a beautiful, handcrafted chess board! These make a great gift too!

Note: This class pairs perfectly with our Chess Set Making Class.

Note: Minimum age is 15 and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

About Dan Katz

Woodworking is my muse—a canvas of endless possibilities. The grain’s texture, the earthy scent, the myriad shapes—it all amazes me. My journey began with grade school projects and blossomed at Bucks Rock as a camper and counselor. From theater sets to boat building, I’ve embraced woodturning as my core hobby. Now, as a marketer turned woodworking teacher, I’m thrilled to share the joy of “making” with others. Let’s shape creativity together!

This class uses a variety of reclaimed lumber that we are redirecting from the dump or burn pile. This may include Brazilian cherry hard wood flooring; pine, oak, poplar, cherry, or maple from pallets; boards made from tress from around the neighborhood, and other woods from old furniture.
