Make a Large Carving / Cutting Board

Make Your Carving Board!

Do you need a massive cutting board to carve a roast or turkey? Join our beginner-friendly woodworking class where you’ll learn to design and build your very own carving board with a routed juice groove.

Here’s what awaits you:

  1. Introduction to Wood Selection: We’ll explore different wood types suitable for cutting boards. From maple to walnut, discover their unique grains and characteristics.
  2. Hands-On Construction: Our experienced instructors will guide you step-by-step through the process. Learn how to:
    • Measure and cut wood pieces
    • Assemble them into a sturdy end-grain pattern
    • Route a drain around the endge of the board
    • Sand and finish your cutting board for a smooth surface
  3. Finishing Touches: Discover food-safe finishes and oils to protect your cutting board and enhance its natural beauty.

By the end of the class, you’ll take home a functional and personalized carving board—a testament to your newfound woodworking skills. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience, this class is perfect for unleashing your creativity!

Note: We have run this course in the past and most people complete their board in the one day. If you find this is not enough time, we will work with you to identify a good time for you to come in and finish the project.

Note: This class has a minimum age of 15.  All those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

About Dan Katz

Woodworking is my muse—a canvas of endless possibilities. The grain’s texture, the earthy scent, the myriad shapes—it all amazes me. My journey began with grade school projects and blossomed at Bucks Rock as a camper and counselor. From theater sets to boat building, I’ve embraced woodturning as my core hobby. Now, as a marketer turned woodworking teacher, I’m thrilled to share the joy of “making” with others. Let’s shape creativity together!

This class uses a variety of reclaimed lumber that we are redirecting from the dump or burn pile. This may include Brazilian cherry hard wood flooring; pine, oak, poplar, cherry, or maple from pallets; boards made from tress from around the neighborhood, and other woods from old furniture.

Reclaimed wood used in this class.

Our Focus on Safety

  • Respect the shop rules and safety guidelines before using any tools or equipment.
  • 95 masks, safety glasses, and gloves are provided.
  • Wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. The glues, paints, and stains we use can permanently stain clothes.
