Turning Bowls, Platters, and More

Turning Bowls, Platters, and More

Whether you are a novice or seeking a refresher in turning, this basic bowl turning class offers an engaging and fulfilling way to experience the fundamental joys of wood turning. Unlike many woodworking projects that may require days or even weeks to complete, turned wooden bowls can be crafted within just a few hours.

On the first day, participants will turn a 4′-6″ wide / 2′-3″ deep bowl using a faceplate, with a focus on tool selection, sharpening techniques for gouges, finishing options, and the safe operation of the lathe. As the course progresses, attendees will explore larger and alternative forms, using a chuck for bigger bowls and platters. Topics such as hollowing, surface texturing, finishing, and more will also be covered.

This class is also a valuable opportunity for experienced turners to repeat and delve deeper into advanced subjects, including the fingernail grind, hollowing techniques, and other areas of interest they wish to explore.

Note: This class has a minimum age of 15.

About Dan Katz

Woodworking is my muse—a canvas of endless possibilities. The grain’s texture, the earthy scent, the myriad shapes—it all amazes me. My journey began with grade school projects and blossomed at Bucks Rock as a camper and counselor. From theater sets to boat building, I’ve embraced woodturning as my core hobby. Now, as a marketer turned woodworking teacher, I’m thrilled to share the joy of “making” with others. Let’s shape creativity together!

This utilizes wood from local trees. A variety of chisels and gauges are provided.

Reclaimed wood used in this class.

Our Focus on Safety

  • Respect the shop rules and safety guidelines before using any tools or equipment.
  • N95 masks, safety glasses, and gloves are provided.
  • Wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. The glues, paints, and stains we use can permanently stain clothes.

The maximum class size to allow for highly personalized instruction and attention is four (4) people. Let me know if you would like a larger size and we can certainly bring along an assistant to help out.
