Large Bowl Turning
Explore the differences in turning techniques as you turn bowls that max out or exceed the bed height of a full-sized lathe. This includes working experience to prepare large green log sections into turning blanks, mounting heavy wet wood, and coring.
Spindle Turning
Learn about wood selection, grain orientation, and the essential tools and equipment as you turn your tops, honey dippers, and a rolling pin. We will explore the roughing and spindle gauges, the skew and parting tool, and feel the differences between steel and carbide tools.
Turning Hollow Forms
Experience the depths as we delve deep into a vessel with carbide tools through both large and small bore holes. You will have the opportunity to test out a few long length tools and stablization jigs.
Lidded-Box Turning
Turn a small, lidded box as you learn about end–grain turning. This is a good entry for new turners and an opportunity for experienced turners looking for a new suite of techniques to explore.
Platter Turning
Learn about wood selection, grain orientation, and the essential tools and equipment as you turn a platter or plate and feel the subtle differences turning the curves of a bowl and the flatness of this form.
Spalted Bowls
Experience the fun of turning slightly rotted (spalted wood). Delve into the use of thick, CA glue and other stabilizers and the impact of spalting on sanding and finishing.
Bowl Finishing
Practice a variety of sanding techniques both on and off the lathe and finishes including CA, shellac, acrylic, and polyurethane. Well beyond the everyday, we will delve into using flame for charred finishes, dye, and the use of paint, enamel, and other materials and techniques for unique highlights.
Gauge Sharpening
Bring your skews, parting, bowl, spindle, scrapers, and other gauges to learn many ways to sharpen HSS and carbide turning tools. We will also discuss the various brands and qualities to consider when buying turning tools.
